The beautiful 1936-S Liberty Walking half dollars were coined near the end of operations for "the Granite Lady," nickname of the stalwart second San Francisco Mint which withstood the devastating 1906 Bay area earthquake and fire. "The Granite Lady" would be replaced in 1937 by a new San Francisco Mint facility in 1937, with the most efficient and modern coining machinery.
