Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Braided Hair half cent was produced from 1840-1857. However, the U.S. Mint only struck Proof versions from 1840-1848, having plenty of earlier half cents on hand. Circulating Braided Hair half cents were minted only from 1849-1857, and only in limited quantities. These pure copper coins are precious mementos from the early years of the nation, and are highly prized by numismatic and historical collectors alike. Add the 1854 half cent to your own collection.
