1865 Two-Cent Piece
Infused with history, the bronze two-cent piece goes back to the days of the Civil War. Circulating coinage vanished from commerce. To alleviate the problem, a new two-cent piece was proposed. One of the new 2¢ coin's significant features was the motto in god we trust. Inspired by a letter written in 1861 by Rev. M. Richard Watkinson that pointed out recognition of God was missing from U.S. coinage, Mint Director James Pollock ordered a motto be added to the two-cent piece. So, the historic 2¢ piece became the first to bear the motto. Whether you're building a complete collection or a type set, you need this important coin.
