This 90% silver half dollar was struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1835 founding of the city of Elgin, Illinois. The obverse features a pioneer while the reverse features the Pioneer Memorial group. The proceeds from the sale of this commemorative were to be put toward a bronze statue named the Pioneer Memorial created by Trygve Rovelstad. In the end, total mintage amounted to 20,015 coins - not enough to support the statue's creation. It was not until 65 years later in November of 2001 that this statue was finally finished and it stands in Elgin today. Add this historic coin to your collection today!
