Discover Ghana’s dramatic Titans of American Innovation series or update your existing collection with this 2021 bi-colored Uncirculated coin struck in 15 grams of titanium! The seventh issue in the series, it honors Dr. Jonas Salk – the American virologist who created the first safe and effective polio vaccine.
Polio terrified the nation. No one knew what caused the disease or how it spread. Yet each year it killed or disabled tens of thousands – most of them children. Dr. Salk and his team at the University of Pittsburg worked tirelessly to find a cure and became national heroes when their vaccine was approved for general use April 12, 1955. By 1963, fewer than 100 annual cases were reported. And by 1979, polio had been eradicated in the United States.
Recall the heroic efforts of Dr. Salk and his team with this newest 2021 issue. Its striking reverse depicts Dr. Salk, a microscope and the polio virus. The equally eye-catching obverse features Queen Elizabeth II. Each coin comes encapsulated for protection with a certificate of authenticity. A fitting tribute to an American hero, and a coin certain to stand out in any collection!
