In 1901, the RRS Discovery launched its three-year maiden voyage to explore Antarctica. The first British ship designed purely for research, Discovery made many scientific breakthroughs, identifying over 500 new species and remapping the magnetic south pole. She sailed south again in 1925 to study whale populations and migrations, providing a scientific basis for regulating the whaling industry and saving many species from extinction.

Honoring Discovery’s 120th anniversary, this legal tender 2021 British 50 Pence’s reverse depicts the ship under full sail. Its obverse features Queen Elizabeth II, the date and issuing territories.
