1881 Three-Cent Piece

Sought after by collectors, these 1881 three-cent coins – struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel – could have been among the loot Jesse James made off with in his final robbery on Sept. 7, 1881. It was night when James descended on the Chicago and Alton Railroad train at Blue Cut, MO, as it slowed to take a curve in the tracks. Finding little money in the safe, James demanded passengers turn over their watches, jewelry and money – estimated at $3,000, before disappearing into the sparsely settled countryside.

To replace fractional paper currency, Philadelphia minted these copper-nickel three-cent coins from 1865-1889. The obverse features Liberty with a beaded coronet and the reverse, a simple laurel wreath with the denomination in roman numerals.
