135-104 B.C. John Hyrcanus I Bronze Prutah

Issued during the reign of John Hyrcanus I (135-104 B.C.), this bronze Prutah recalls the high priest who became the Jewish nation’s first ruler to issue coins. This all followed soon after the revolts involving John Hyrcanus I’s father (Simon) and uncle (the legendary Judah Maccabee). These revolts inspired today’s Hanukkah celebrations.
