Partway through 1842, the size of the date on the obverse of the Liberty Seated half dollar was enlarged. Fewer "small date" coins were minted, and the 1842 Small Date coin is a sought-after variety today. The 90% silver Liberty Seated series was issued for over 50 years from 1838 to 1891, and these classic silver coins are in great demand among collectors. The obverse of the coin depicts Liberty seated on a rock, while the reverse features an eagle with a shield on its breast.
