In 1840, the pure copper Braided Hair half cent was introduced. However, plenty of earlier Classic Head half cents were in storage and available to use, so the only half cents struck from 1840-1848 were Proofs. The first Braided Hair half cents minted for circulation were 1849 issues. The obverse design depicts Liberty facing left, while the reverse features a continuous wreath encircling the denomination.
