Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 90% silver Liberty Seated quarter was issued from 1838-1891. The obverse depicts Liberty seated on a rock, while the reverse features an eagle perched on an olive branch. During 1853, the weight of the coin was reduced, and arrows were placed on each side of the date on 1853-1855 quarters to indicate the change. Rays were also added to the reverse of 1853 quarters only, making that year's coins unique.
