Introduced in 1866 to replace unpopular 5¢ Fractional Notes, this first-ever 5¢ nickel features a Union Shield on the obverse and numeral "5" surrounded by rays and stars on the reverse. The reverse was attacked as emulating the Confederate flag's "stars and bars", creating suspicion that rebel supporters were operating within the mint. The rays also impaired striking quality, and were removed early in 1867, creating the short-lived "With Rays" variety. Get the scarce and sought-after 1866 Shield nickel With Rays today!
