Struck over 140 years ago at the San Francisco Mint, this $20 Liberty Head gold double eagle is a scarce Type II issue – struck only from 1866-1876 and stating its value as twenty d. on the reverse (later issues are inscribed twenty dollars). This gold coin was also among the first to bear the motto in god we trust above the eagle on the reverse – added to most U.S. coins during the religious fervor of the Civil War era.

Double eagles, or $20 gold pieces, came into existence in 1849 during the California gold rush. The San Francisco Mint was soon established in 1854, to convert the large quantities of California gold into U.S. coinage. This historic 1869-S double eagle bears the coveted pedigree of gold rush country.

Since most gold coins of this age circulated widely in the Old West, higher-grade circulated pieces are scarce, and Mint State examples are rare. To date, NGC has graded only 56 of these 1869-S double eagles higher than About Uncirculated AU-58. Add this historic issue to your collection in NGC-certified AU-58 or AU-55 condition, with only the slightest wear on the highest points of the design. Supplies are limited – order today.
