This is the first time in several years we've been able to offer a nice group of seldom-seen Trade silver dollars in our catalogs! Issued from 1873-1878 for trade in the Orient (Proofs were struck until 1885), these coins contained more silver than a Morgan dollar – matching the silver content of Mexican Pesos, which were the accepted coins in the Orient. Most Trade dollars went overseas and never came back. Many that did return were "chop marked" with Oriental symbols by merchants to verify their weight and content.

Though intended only for export, Trade dollars were legal tender and many coins circulated within the United States. So Congress repealed legal tender status in 1876, but domestic use continued. In 1886, the Treasury called in all Trade dollars not "mutilated" (chop marked) for redemption in standard silver coinage. Of about 36 million Trade dollars struck for commercial use, about 7.7 million were redeemed and melted! Combined with the many millions of coins sent overseas never to return, Trade silver dollars are very seldom seen and in great demand among collectors.

The obverse depicts Liberty at the seashore, extending an olive branch to welcome international trade. The reverse bears an eagle, a statement of weight and content (420 GRAINS 900 FINE), and the rim inscription TRADE DOLLAR. We have a limited supply of 1875-1878-S Trade silver dollars available in desirable conditions, all with no chop marks. Add this treasured silver dollar to your collection today!
