Customer Reviews

Silver dollar collectors know that 1878 was special, because that’s when 90% silver Morgans were first struck. That year, the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia actually created three different tail feather designs. Today these coins are highly sought after by collectors. I am pleased to offer you the chance to own two elusive examples in desirable Choice Uncirculated condition.

The first Morgans struck featured an eagle with 8 Tail Feathers on the reverse. Then after only a few weeks, due to disagreement over how many feathers the eagle should show, new reverse dies were created for the 7 Tail Feathers Morgan. But some 8 Feather coins were overstruck with a 7 Feather die, creating the famous “7 over 8” variety!

Offered here are the original 8 Tail Feather 1878 Morgan dollar and the famed “7 over 8” Tail Feather variety. Each piece has been graded Choice Uncirculated, MS-63 by our experts and is certified by PCGS. They display attractive original mint luster and sharp strikes – allowing you to fully enjoy all of the fine details of these first-year varieties. Plus, you can buy both and SAVE off individual coin prices! Don’t miss your opportunity to add these historic first-year varieties to your collection.
