Thanks to a fortunate purchase, you can now own a lustrous Mint State set of two important first-year-of-issue 1878 Morgan Silver Dollars. Few realize the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia actually struck three different reverse designs that year.

The first design was an eagle with 8 tail feathers. But because of a disagreement over how many tail feathers should show, existing dies were reimpressed with 7 tail feathers, creating a 7 over 8 Tail Feathers variety. Finally, new dies were created for the 7 Tail Feathers Morgan dollar.

But then, two major varieties of that final design emerged! This two-coin set gives you both of those 1878 7 tail feather designs – the 2nd reverse (Reverse of 78), with parallel top arrow feather and concave eagle’s breast, and the scarcer 3rd reverse (Reverse of 79), with a slanted top arrow feather and convex eagle’s breast.

These coins have been graded Choice Uncirculated MS-63 by our experts and certified by PCGS or NGC. They feature full mint luster and all the original design details so you can appreciate the uniqueness of each variety. At this grade level, the Reverse of 79, struck later in 1878 with the newly created reverse dies, is much scarcer than the Reverse of 78. Experts estimate that only about 20% of all Mint State 1878 7 Tail Feathers Morgans are this 3rd reverse type.
