The 1887 Liberty Head $10 gold pieces (or eagles) were struck at the main U.S. Mint in Philadelphia - the birthplace of America`s coinage, where production of U.S. coins began in 1793. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, Liberty Head eagles featured a popular, classic motif and were issued from 1838 to 1907. During 1887, Thomas Edison built the first motor-driven phonograph and Arthur Conan Doyle published his first Sherlock Holmes mystery novel.
