For the first time in more than 7 years, I’m pleased to feature the prized 1891-CC Morgan VAM-3 “Spitting Eagle” – a clearly visible Morgan dollar variety! It’s nicknamed the Spitting Eagle because of the raised metal bump in front of the eagle’s beak on the reverse – an interesting feature known as a die gouge. It was created when someone or something accidentally made a gash in the die. Because the die bears the incuse mirror image of the coin, the gash appears as a bump on the surface of the struck coin. What’s more, this lustrous Mint State coin is a low-mintage Carson City dollar from the final years of the mint’s operations.

A variety or VAM is a coin with recognizably different features than others of the same date and mint. There are lots of them out there – Hot Lips, Scarface and Donkey Tail – and every one is identified by a catalog or VAM number. VAMs take their name from avid researchers and silver dollar enthusiasts Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis. Plus, the exciting 1891-CC Spitting Eagle, VAM-3 offered here is listed in the book Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties – the VAM Keys.

Thanks to an opportunity purchase, I’m pleased to offer you this popular Carson City Morgan dollar variety in three very desirable Uncirculated grades. These coins have been certified by either NGC or PCGS, and we’ve hand selected each for quality and eye appeal. With only a few in stock, you shouldn’t wait – get yours right away!
