U.S. half dollars carried the Liberty Seated design for over 50 years from 1839 to 1891, and were due for a change. Barber half dollars, struck in 90% silver and named for their designer, Charles E. Barber, debuted in 1892. These coins feature the profile of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, with a wreath of laurel encircling her head. An adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States is found on the reverse. The 1900 Barber half dollar represents the final series issue of the 19th century.
