The San Francisco Mint managed to produce 457,000 Liberty Head $10 gold pieces in 1906, although in April the entire bay area was jolted by a violent earthquake, followed by days of citywide fire. The stalwart San Francisco Mint was one of very few buildings to survive, and it became a relief center as well as banking center for the city. The 1906-S $10 gold piece is a precious remembrance of San Francisco`s will and determination.
