From the renaissance of U.S. coinage comes a first-year 1908 $5 Gold Indian Head featuring America’s only incuse half eagle coin design. This unique motif was created a century ago by Bela Lyon Pratt, who chose to sink or “incuse” the coin’s design below the surfaces.
During the Great Depression, Roosevelt issued the Gold Recall Order of 1933, making gold illegal to own. Thousands of collectors gave up historic gold coins, which were melted (especially the smaller denominations), making them difficult to find. This 1908 issue from Philadelphia had a mintage of just 577,845 to begin with – so we can only guess how many still exist today. Order now to give this first-year half eagle, still in Extra Fine condition after more than 110 years.
