1908 Liberty Head $5 Gold Half Eagle

Liberty Head $5 gold pieces (or half eagles) were struck only at the Philadelphia Mint in 1908, the final year of this popular, long-running series – which was introduced 70 years earlier in 1839. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the $5 Liberty Heads were replaced partway through 1908 with an Indian Head motif. The 1908 Liberty Heads are prized by collectors as the final issue of one of the most enduring coinage designs in American history!
