U.S. half dollars carried the Liberty Seated design for over 50 years from 1839 to 1891, and were due for a change. Barber half dollars, struck in 90% silver and named for their designer, Charles E. Barber, debuted in 1892. The 1909-O Barber half dollar was produced at the New Orleans Mint during that facility`s final year of operation (the "O" mint mark is found below the eagle on the reverse).
