A mere 52,000 pieces were struck during the final two weeks of 1916, but not released until January of 1917 – and it’s estimated today that just 10,000 pieces survive in all grades.

The 1916 Type 1 is the lowest mintage issue in the Standing Liberty quarter series, and one of the lowest mintage of all 20th century U.S. coins issued for circulation – earning it the #59 ranking in 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
