The Mercury dime was introduced in 1916, when impressive new designs were placed on the dime, quarter, and half dollar. The highly acclaimed new motifs were in large part the result of the Commission of Fine Arts, established in 1910 to oversee artistic endeavors in government. Noted sculptor A. A. Weinman created new designs for the dime and half dollar, while sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil devised a beautiful new design for the quarter.
