On the back of the 5 Mark Note is the Neue Wache (German for new guardhouse), a building of remembrance since 1818 that honors those lost in the Napoleonic Wars and the Wars of Liberation. The 1 Lira Note was issued in 1944 by Italy’s provisional government, established with Allied support, after the ouster of Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini the year before.
