2001-P Sacagawea Dollar "Chocolate" Mint Error

When America’s first small-size “golden dollars” depicting Sacagawea were introduced in 2000, it became apparent that the coins, with their pure copper core and outer layers of manganese brass, were prone to spotting, discoloration and tarnishing. So when some 2001-P Sacagawea dollars with a darker color and subdued luster were discovered in original mint bags over a decade ago, numismatic experts determined that the coins were experimentally rinsed or coated to resist tarnishing, or that the planchets had been improperly annealed. The U.S. Mint declined to describe the treatment, or to say if the coins had been mistakenly released. Given the brown coloring that the error creates, we’ve identified these as “Chocolate” Sacagawea dollars!
