Ruling the Roman Empire from A.D. 253-268, Emperor Gallienus endured a multitude of problems including invasions, rebellions, plague and economic malaise. Seeking divine assistance to improve the fortunes of the empire, Gallienus struck a variety of coins featuring real or mythical animals associated with and honoring prominent Roman deities. This bronze Antoninianus depicts the emperor on the obverse and features a deer on the reverse to please Diana – goddess of the hunt, the moon and nature. Closely associated with woodlands and wild animals, deer were especially sacred to Diana.
