Customer Reviews
Navigational and military skill enabled Carausius to gain prominence under Maximianus. Ordered as naval commander to rid the English Channel of Saxon and Frankish pirates, he instead allowed them to land and raided their plunder himself. Word reached Maximianus, who ordered his execution, but not before Carausius and his men fled with ships to Britain. Attempts by the Romans to recover Britain were unsuccessful. He was murdered by his chief minister.
