Little is known of the usurper Allectus and his reign in Britain. Once the first minister of Emperor Carausius, Allectus later murdered him. He did not have the maritime skills of his predecessor. Nor could he inspire loyalty among the Britons. Instead, he cruelly oppressed them. During an attack by Constantius (father of Constantine the Great), Allectus was killed and the island was returned to the Empire after more than 10 years of separation.
