Coponius became the first prefect of Judaea in A.D. 6. Of knightly rank, he was appointed to his position by Augustus. His rule saw the revolt of Judas the Galilean, and the first and only census taken by a prefect for tax purposes. In A.D. 9, Coponius was recalled to Rome, and his position was filled by Marcus Ambibulus.
