Maximinus II, nephew of Emperor Galerius, rose through the ranks of the army and was adopted by Galerius who gave him the title of Caesar in 305. In late 308, Maximinus II was named Filius Augustorum. A year later, Maximinus II was promoted to the rank of Augustus in the east, along with Licinius. He won a major victory over the Persians in 310 and continued to wage war against eastern enemies, but Licinius attacked and defeated him in April 313.
