Born in an eastern Roman province, Quintillus was a younger brother of Emperor Claudius II (who reigned A.D. 268-270). After Quintillus helped Claudius stop an invasion of German tribes, Claudius caught an epidemic disease in A.D. 270 and died. Then Quintillus was proclaimed emperor, but a few months later was challenged for the title by the Roman general Aurelian. When Quintillus' troops abandoned him to support Aurelian, Quintillus committed suicide.
