Following the end of World War I, Austria was struggling. Left in a state of unrest after the collapse of the Habsburg dynasty, the country’s economy was in decline with a shortage of small denomination coins. This made it almost impossible for daily commerce to take place in Austrian cities and towns. In an effort to help struggling communities, the Finance Ministry authorized emergency paper money called “Notgelds.”

These original packs of 100 Uncirculated 20 Heller Notgeld notes from northern Austria were issued more than a century ago in 1921. They feature a vibrant violet color and highlight the beauty of Austria. The face of each note features a view of the Danube River from the Castle of Linz Schlossmuseum on the right, while the towers of the New Cathedral of Linz and the Cathedral of St. Ignace are on the left. Each back displays the Column of the Holy Trinity found in Linz’s Hauptplatz Main Square with St. Ignace Cathedral in the background.
