National Bank Notes were issued from 1863-1935 by private banks federally chartered as "national banks." Secured by U.S. bonds purchased by the banks, these notes feature the U.S. Treasury Seal and common designs, but also bear the name and charter number of the bank, as well as signatures of the bank's officials. This Series 1902 "plain back" $5 note features a vignette of "The Landing of the Pilgrims" on the back, but no charter dates. The face depicts President Benjamin Harrison, bears a blue Treasury seal and charter number, and Elliott-White Treasury signatures.
