David M. Sundman
David Sundman grew up with the mail-order stamp and coin business founded by his parents Maynard and Fannie in the small, friendly town of Littleton, NH. By age five he was helping sort bags of Indian Head cents by dates, stacking the highest-mintage 1907 coins so high that the pile toppled over! Following the discovery of the 1955/55 Doubled Die Cent, he began searching through coins in circulation hoping to find one of these prized errors.
David became so intrigued by the stories behind stamps and coins that he later earned a degree in history from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. After gaining business experience with a retail chain in the Washington, D.C. area, he joined the family collectibles firm in 1972 and was named president in 1985.
A lifetime member of the American Numismatic Association, David is a frequent presenter at ANA conventions and has received the organization's Presidential Award, Glenn Smedley Memorial Award, and Medal of Merit for contributions to the group's numismatic and educational programs. He is a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild, a Fellow of the American Numismatic Society, and Treasurer of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society.
David is a current contributor to A Guide Book of United States Coins (the Red Book) and he co-authored the best-selling book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes with Q. David Bowers. He is an active collector of colonial coins and paper money, obsolete bank notes, U.S. large cents and type coins, and ancient Greek, Roman and Biblical coinage. David also collects U.S. stamps, vintage books and numismatic works, stereoview photographs and historic postcards.
